Biological characteristics of Trichogramma pretiosum and Trichogramma acacioi (Hym.: Trichogrammatidae), parasitoids of the avocado defoliator Nipteria panacea (Lep.: Geometridae), on eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Lep.: Pyralidae) BABT
Pratissoli,Dirceu; Zanuncio,José Cola; Vianna,Ulysses Rodrigues; Andrade,Josimar Souza; Zanotti,Luiz Carlos Marozzi; Silva,Alexandre Faria da.
The objective of this investigation was to study Trichogramma pretiosum and T. acacioi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), parasitoids of the avocado defoliator Nipteria panacea (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) on the eggs of the alternative host Anagasta kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) aiming to use them for biological control of this pest in avocado orchards. The cubic model presented better adjustment for duration of the life cycle of T. pretiosum and T. acacioi with the host A. kuehniella which shows that development rate of these species increases with temperature within the range tested. The number of individuals of both Trichogramma species emerged per egg from this host was higher than one. The quadratic model was significant for viability of T....

Oliveira,Simone Alves de; Souza,Brígida; Auad,Alexander Machado; Carvalho,Caio Antunes.
The aim of this study was to verify the viability of exclusive use of elephant grass pollen, Pennisetum purpureum (Schum), to feed larvae of the lacewing Chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861). The insects were kept at 24ºC and the duration and survival rate of each instar and the larval and pupal phases were recorded. The diet provided complete development of the larvae. The average duration of the first and second instars was the same (6.9 days), while the third instar lasted an average of 10.0 days and the pupal phase 13.2 days. The average survival of the larvae was above 80% for the first, second and third instars, and 70.0% and 33.3% for the larval and pupal phase, respectively. These results indicate that the exclusive use of elephant grass pollen can...

Comparative biology of two congeneric stinkbugs, Chinavia impicticornis and C. ubica (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) PAB
Silva,Cleonor Cavalcante Alves; Laumann,Raul Alberto; Moraes,Maria Carolina Blassioli; Aquino,Michely Ferreira Santos de; Borges,Miguel.
The objective of this work was to compare the biology of Chinavia impicticornis and C. ubica (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), two species of stinkbugs that occur as secondary pests in soybean. Life table procedures were used for evaluating nymphs, and fecundity tables for evaluating adults, in order to establish the demographics of the two species. The two species have similar demographic parameters, and the development of immature stages, from egg to adult, had similar duration periods of approximately 30 days. In both species, eggs and second-instar nymphs were the stages with higher mortality. Total egg production did not differ between females of both species. Fecundity and survival curves for adults showed similar trends in both species. However, C. ubica...

Development of a dry artificial diet for Nezara viridula (L.) and Euschistus heros (Fabricius) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Fortes,Priscila; Magro,Sandra R.; Panizzi,Antônio R.; Parra,José R.P..
Artificial diets prepared with wheat germ, soybean protein, dextrosol, potato starch, sucrose, cellulose, soybean or sunflower oil, and vitamin solution for rearing Nezara viridula (L.) and Euschistus heros (Fabricius) were tested under controlled temperature (25 ± 1°C), RH (60 ± 10%), and photophase (14h). Three diets were tested and compared with the natural diet privet [soybean and peanut seeds and privet Ligustrum lucidum Ait. fruit (Oleaceae)]. All three artificial diets allowed full development. The diet containing sunflower oil was the most suitable for N. viridula while E. heros developed better on a diet composed of soybean oil. Data indicated that the artificial diets were inferior to the natural diet. The artificial diets were more adequate for...

Effect of Carbon dioxide (CO2) on mortality and reproduction of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller 1879), in mass rearing, aiming at the production of Trichogramma spp. Anais da ABC (AABC)
COELHO JUNIOR,ALOISIO; PARRA,JOSE R.P..
Eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller 1879) are widely used for mass rearing of Trichogramma spp. and other parasitoids and predators, largely commercialized in many countries. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of carbon dioxide (CO2) originated from larval metabolism on the biological parameters of A. kuehniella. For that purpose, we assess the production of carbon dioxide (CO2) per rearing tray of A. kuehniella and the effect of CO2 on the viability of egg-to-adult period and oviposition of A. kuehniella. Results allow to estimate that a rearing tray, containing 10,000 larvae between the 4th and 5th instars, produces an average of 30.67 mL of CO2 per hour. The highest egg production of A. kuehniella was obtained when the larvae were kept in...

First record of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), in Pará nut, Bertholletia excelsa (Lecythidaceae) Neotropical Entomology
Gumier-Costa,Fabiano.
We report the occurrence of Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) attacking Pará nuts stored in the southeast of Para state. The coffee berry borer successfully colonized and reproduced using Pará nuts as a food source. Based on this observation, the Pará nuts can be used as an alternative food source in rearing the coffee berry borer. Also, attention should be brought to need of proper storage of these nuts to avoid infestation by this pest.

Methodology of mass multiplication of Telenomus podisi Ash. and Trissolcus basalis (Woll.) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) on eggs of Euschistus heros (Fab.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Peres,Wilsimar A.A.; Corrêa-Ferreira,Beatriz S..
Laboratory studies were carried out to develop a methodology for the mass production of Telenomus podisi Ash. and Trissolcus basalis (Woll.) on eggs of Euschistus heros (Fabr.) and to compare it with the methodology presently used in the biological control program of soybean stink bugs in Brazil [T. basalis reared on Nezara viridula (L.) eggs]. In a first experiment, egg masses randomly distributed were shown the most adequate method of exposure of E. heros to parasitism. In a second experiment, egg masses of E. heros were randomly glued on cardboard cards and exposed to parasitism by T. podisi and T. basalis. The parasitoids multiplied on E. heros eggs showed parasitism (ca. 99%) similar to that observed with T. basalis reared on N. viridula eggs (99.7%)....

Quality assessment of Trichogramma parasitoids (Trichogramma spp.) from six mexican insectaries Agrociencia
González-Cabrera,Jaime; Arredondo-Bernal,Hugo C.; Stouthamer,Richard.
Quality of mass-reared biological control agents is vital. There are reports that Trichogramma spp. failed to control the target pest, and poor quality may explain these failures. The first goal of this study was to determine which way of reproduction was practiced by Trichogramma spp. colonies from Mexican insectaries, either sexual or asexual, and the second goal was to determine whether those Trichogramma spp. colonies meet the quality standards suggested by the International Organization for Biological Control/ European Community (IOBC/EC). In March 2010, a letter was sent to 27 Trichogramma spp. producers. Six insectaries agreed to participate and sent dead samples of its colonies, a total of 10 colonies. For statistical analysis these colonies were...

Oliveira,Harley Nonato de; Zanuncio,José Cola; Pedruzzi,Eder Pin; Espindula,Marcelo Curitiba.
Thyrinteina arnobia, is one of the most important defoliating caterpillars of Eucalyptus in Brazil The objective of this work was to evaluate the development and the reproduction of feeding on leaves of guava (Psidium guajava) or Eucalyptus grandis in the 15th generation, after rearing this species for 14 genrations on guava leaves. T. arnobia showed shorter larval period, better viability of caterpillars and pupae, heavier pupae, higher number of eggs per female, better egg viability and shorter longevity of females in guava leaves than in Eucalyptus leaves. The better development and reproduction with P. guajava showed that this insect could be reared in laboratory with guava leaves.

Reproductive potential of Chrysoperla externa maintained in different cage sizes in laboratory conditions Ciência Rural
Battel,Ana Paula Magalhães Borges; Moral,Rafael de Andrade; Rodrigues,Camila Alves; Araújo,Márcio da Silva; Godoy,Wesley Augusto Conde.
ABSTRACT: This study investigated the influence of cage sizes on the survival and reproductive potential of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen). Size of breeding cages significantly affected the reproductive potential of C. externa . Our results indicated that in cages smaller (7.5cm of diameter) than those usually recommended for the rearing of this insect (10cm diameter), females showed higher rates of oviposition. Reduction of space for rearing natural enemies in the laboratory is very important for developing biological control programs.
